6 Types of Frozen Desserts

Think a soft serve machine can only produce soft serve ice cream? Well, that’s certainly not the case when it comes to Spaceman soft serve machines! In this article, we will go over the different types of frozen desserts your Spaceman machine can produce and the differences between them all.

Soft Serve Ice Cream

To start off with the most obvious of them all, our machines are meant to produce soft serve. Soft serve is basically ice cream that is soft. The reason that soft serve is soft is because air is incorporated during the freezing process, giving it a fluffy, light, and creamy texture.

Milkshakes

Milkshakes are a popular dessert, mainly because they taste like ice cream but they’re even easier to consume. They’re typically made of ice cream and milk, which is what gives them a more liquid and frothy consistency. You can make milkshakes in your Spaceman machine in several ways, one of them being combining regular soft serve with a flavored syrup to make the product thinner, or by lowering the viscosity of your machine.  If you prefer to use a shake machine, we have those too!  In this way you are dispensing milkshakes at, or close to the consistency you wish to serve them and have a machine which is reliable and easy to operate, which can keep up with high demands and serve large 16-32 oz servings repeatably throughout the day.

Frozen Yogurt

We like to refer to frozen yogurt as the healthier cousin to soft serve. Frozen yogurt is made from a mixture of yogurt, milk, and cream. Frozen yogurt tends to be lower in calories and fat than ice cream, but it ultimately depends on the toppings you choose. Frozen yogurt also incorporates air during the freezing process, making it appear similar to soft serve.

Gelato

Gelato is very similar to ice cream, but it’s made with a greater proportion of whole milk to cream. Ice cream is also made with eggs, while gelato is mostly void of eggs. The air volume in gelato typically ranges from 20%-35%, while regular ice cream contains about 50% air by volume.

Sorbet

Sorbet is probably the most different of them all, given its icy texture. Sorbet is usually made with simple syrup that is infused with fruit puree and then chilled and churned. The churning process is what produces tiny ice crystals and gives sorbet its smooth texture.

Frozen Custard

Last but not least, frozen custard is another tasty treat that can be made in a Spaceman machine. Frozen custard is made with milk, cream, and egg yolks. Frozen custard must contain at least 1.4% egg yolk solids to be considered custard. If it contains less than that, it is considered ice cream. The ingredients used in frozen custard are what makes it so rich, thick, and creamy.

Although ice cream remains our customers’ top choice when using our soft serve machines, Spaceman machines can produce a variety of frozen desserts to keep them engaged and ensure they return for more. If you own a dessert shop, you can serve milkshakes as a delightful option, but you can also consider offering frozen yogurt for those seeking healthier sweet indulgences. By diversifying your menu, you can cater to different preferences and attract a wider customer base.
